In an effort to produce a totally well-defined nutritional source for cells, Morgan, Morton and Parker developed what has become known as Medium 199. It was found the growth of explanted tissue could be measured in Medium 199. However, long-term cultivation of cells required a serum supplement. Currently, it is used in virology and vaccine production. It is also used in the culture of many non-transformed cells.
