PCNA becomes detectable in the G1 phase of the cell cycle and reaches a maximum level of expression during mitosis. PCNA is highly conserved across species and is a critical part of the DNA polymerase holoenzyme. The level of PCNA expression depends on the proliferative potential of the cell examined.
