Biochem Physiol Actions: Ferroquine (SSR 97193) is an antimalarial chloroquine analog effective against chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum. Ferroquine is thought to act by producing oxidative stress and by inhibiting the formation of hemozoin, produced by Malaria parasites as a disposal product of heme, which would otherwise be toxic to the Plasmodium cells.
