Biochem Physiol Actions: PSMB4 (proteasome subunit, ß type, 4) is a high molecular weight, multicatalytic protein. It is a ß subunit of the 20S proteasome, which is the center of catalytic 26S proteasome. It interacts with the R-Smad family member Smad1 and the ornithine decarboxylase antizyme (Az) to form a complex during transcriptional regulation. This interaction is stimulated by bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) receptors for further translocation of proteins into the nucleus. Upregulated expression of PSMB4 have been reported in multiple myeloma (MM) plasma and cell lines. It regulates multiple myeloma cell growth by stimulating NF-?B activity.
