Biochem Physiol Actions: Laminin subunit a-4 (a component of laminin-8/9) is a protein encoded by the LAMA4 gene in humans. It is found to be expressed in basement membranes of endothelial cells, the peripheral nerves, and muscle fibers. It interacts with syndecan-2 and/or -4 thereby playing a crucial role in cell adhesion and vessel wall formation in skin. In hepatocelluar carcinoma (HCC), it is up-regulated on both mRNA and protein levels and plays a role in hepatocarcinogenesis and tumor progression. This gene may act as a marker for HCC diagnosis.
