Magnesium is a typical ionic halide, and is very soluble in water. Magnesium is an essential co-factor in many enzymes, including DNAse, some restriction enzymes, and Ribonuclease H.

Applications
Magnesium Chloride, 2 M can be added to SOB and SOC medium at a concentration of 20 mM (10 mL 2 M MgCl2 per liter).
